    Our unit is composed of researchers specialized in different cognitive domains in human, and researchers working on animal. We put together our different expertises to build a more integrated model of schizophrenia, a complex and multiform pathology. Our common objective is to understand the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and to search for new therapeutic targets. Anne Giersch, Director

We aim at understanding the pathophysiology of schizophrenia , and at developing new therapeutic concepts.

The diagnosis of schizophrenia relies on clinical symptoms exclusively, even though the pathology is associated to invalidating cognitive disorders, on which antipsychotic drugs have no effect. We identified two series of cognitive disorders which might characterize schizophrenia: the disorders of autobiographical memory, which affect the sense of elf, and more elementary cognitive disorders leading to a disruption in the sense of time continuity. We explore the pathophysiological role of these disorders by exploring their link with symptoms like delusions. We also study the link between cognitive disorders and neuronal network alterations, by means of imaging methods in human (fMRI, EEG), and animal models (ketamine injection, neurodevelopmental models). Our work leads to two types of therapeutic concept. On the one hand, we develop methods of cognitive remediation, by targeting especially identity disorders. On the other hand, we try to reproduce more elementary cognitive disorders in our animal models, in order to check, in the longer term, if deep brain stimulation can correct them.

    A post-doctoral position for a young and independent researcher has opened up in the laboratory INSERM U1114 ‘Pathophysiology and cognitive pathopsychology of schizophrenia’ in Strasbourg, to work with Dr Anne Giersch (INSERM Research Director), in the framework of a European project entitled ‘VirtualTimes’, in collaboration with the project partners (Kai Vogeley, Köln en Allemagne ; Marc Wittmann, Freiburg en Allemagne ; Marc Eric Latoschik, Würzburg en Allemagne ; Niklas Ravaja, Helsinki en Finlande ; Xavier Palomer, Barcelone en Espagne).

    Mission: This project is aimed at manipulating the temporal properties of sensory information in a virtual environment, in order to diagnose timing disorders with a playful approach in several mental pathologies (schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, autism), and also to develop therapeutic approaches. In the laboratory in Strasbourg, the approach is based on prior work in the team, which showed that patients with schizophrenia have difficulties to consciously order sensory information in time, paradoxically associated with an abnormal sensitivity to imperceptible asynchronies. The post-doctoral fellow will be in charge of developing and conducting a protocol in patients with schizophrenia vs. controls, with methods of experimental psychology, associated with fMRI and EEG recordings.

    Environment: The researcher will benefit from the laboratory expertise in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, especially in the sensory timing domain. Several students are already involved in this domain, providing a rich scientific environment. In addition, the researcher will benefit from the collaborations within the project, with no less than 11 post-doctoral students recruited in the different sites. Finally, the postdoctoral fellow will benefit from the local links with the imaging plateform (icube).

    Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the context of a multisite, multipartner collaboration between Anne Giersch (INSERM U1114, Strasbourg Univ.), Céline Meillier, Jack Foucher & Sylvain Faisan (I-Cube, CNRS, Strasbourg Univ.) and Virginie van Wassenhove (NeuroSpin, Saclay) as part of the FRM project entitled “Time, self and resting states in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder”.

     

    The position is for 18 months, salary will be commensurate with experience and start date is ASAP.

     

    Profile: The successful candidate will have demonstrated proficiency with data processing and/ordata analysis.

                                                            

    Duties: The successful candidate will be responsible to model fMRI activity and the impact of time tasks on the dynamic of resting states networks. Moreover, the successful candidate will also examine the changes in the network activation over time, and how this dynamic and its disturbance in patients with schizophrenia and depression are governed by the networks identified during the time tasks.

     

    Additional responsibilities include:

    • Literature review and mastery of the topic;
    • Quality controls for the analysis of fMRI data;
    • Effective communication with peers within the consortium; 
    • Concise progress reports and coordination of discussion meetings among partners;
    • Analysisand publication of the data;

     

    The successful participant will be located at the University of Strasbourg for fMRI analysis,and will work under the supervision of Céline Meillier and Sylvain Faisan; he will benefit from the consortium and work in collaboration with Virginie van Wassenhove, with stays in Neurospin.

    The University of Strasbourg is one of the largest scientific hub in France, with close partnership in Europe, and especially cross-boarder exchanges with Germany and Switzerland. I-Cube (CNRS) is a large laboratory with more than 650 members working in the fields of engineering science and computer science, with imaging as the unifying theme. The INSERM laboratory headed by Anne Giersch works in close collaboration with both i-Cube and Virginie van Wassenhove since years. Her laboratory is recognized for its expertise in the field of cognition and psychotic disorders.

    NeuroSpin is a neuroimaging center dedicated to the understanding of the human brain. Five laboratories currently share their expertise on site and provide a stimulating research environment. The hosting team would be the Cognition & Brain Dynamics team lead by Virginie van Wassenhove.
